A Tree Grows

One of my favorite authors to re-read is Betty Smith. Two of her books are personal favorites that I can read over and over without getting tired of them.

Joy in the Morning is one of the sweetest stories of love, marriage and parenthood as a young adult and one that I enjoy completely. I love Smith’s writing style and the descriptive nature of her prose…reading her books is a soothing experience that calms and entertains me. I can savor her words strung together like savory tid bits from a bamboo skewer…gently tugged from the wood and masticated tenderly between the teeth. Her books are textural, seasoned and yet simple…

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn is a book that I never read til I was an adult in college, perusing the local library for new books to read. I had heard a lot about the book and I decided to read it…and fell in love. It’s heartbreaking but sweet and not at all old and tired…and now that I am done with college and working a regular old job, books have once more become that which I live for to keep my life entertained and fulfilled. It’s wonderful to have a great book to read on a quiet Sunday morning before the world awakens…that tree keeps growing just as my love for these books keeps growing.
