More than a Meal

6 01 2010

Tonight I went to this local place called The Banquet with D and his parents to volunteer our time. This place has food and groups that come in and donate time, money, food and friendship for impoverished and needy families and individuals in the Sioux Falls area. It’s so great that there are so many people who are willing to give their time and money to help those less fortunate than themselves. I was excited to do this tonight because I love giving back to the community and I spent a lot of time in high school at soup kitchens, doing missions trips and fundraisers, etc. This was a great opportunity!

The bad weather prevented the church group scheduled for tonight from making it to SuFu so the word was sent out this afternoon that there were more people needed for this meal…and 50 people showed up! It was amazing…old, young, guys and gals…all showed up! Half the Augustana football team showed up to work, too! These huge hulking guys came to pass out milk and water and it was great to see!

I ended up pouring water, milk and coffee to the people that came in and talked to a few of them. I was enjoying myself! I love doing this stuff! The only downside was the enormous amounts of guys hitting on me, asking me “why do you have such a pretty face?” and other comments! It was funny…and a little awkward. I ignored it as much as possible but I am glad that we went because it was nice to give people some joy and a hot meal on a night this cold. Some people wanted to be left alone, some wanted to talk with a smiling face and all of them wanted a hot meal and some companionship! I encourage everyone who has a little time to get out there and give of themselves!

Note to self: try to donate more time and money to charitable foundations.

*Donate canned goods and dry goods at the donation drops at grocery stores or shelters.

*Go through winter clothes and drop them off at the Salvation Army for people who need warm clothes.

*Drop loose change in a jar and have it changed to cash each month then donate it to charity of choice.

*Find old cell phones and send to battered womens’ shelters to be refurbished and distributed.

*Make care packages for battered womens’ shelter (small size soaps, lotion, toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, brushes, etc.)

Any other ways that you guys contribute/donate/volunteer? Please share, I would love to hear from you!
